Rise and Shine, Junior Farmers!
Well the holidays are over and it’s back to school for you – and you know what that means…getting up early!
On the farm, we always get up early to milk the cows and feed the
animals and clean all of their pens. Sometimes we get up at 5.30 in the
morning – before the sun comes up!
I like to sleep in, but there are lots of chores for me to do. Do you have to do any chores before or after school?
Write to me and tell me what jobs you have to do at your house. The
first three mails will win a family pass to Apollo Bay Family Farm and
a snack pack for the family!
Send your entries to:
Captain Cow, Apollo Bay Family Farm, PO Box 275, Apollo Bay, 3233.
Competition closes 5pm on Wednesday, February 28, 2007.

SPOTLIGHT ON ... GOATS!
GOAT FACTS
scientific name: capra hircus
class: mammalia
gestation period: 145-155 days
A female goat is called a
doe
or
nanny
goat, while a male goat is called a
buck
or a
billy
goat. A baby goat is called a
kid
. Neutered goats are called
wethers
.
Goats have been used as farm animals for centuries, giving us milk, meat, wool and leather.
Goats have two teats, compared to four teats on a cow.
Goats like to have a large area to roam around and find food. They love eating woody, thorny bushes (like mum’s roses!) and will eat trees before they eat grass. They need a lot of roughage in their diet.
A goat has no teeth in the upper front of its mouth, but has eight teeth in the lower front and you can tell the age of the goat by the size and condition of these teeth.
Goats are great climbers; they are often found living in hilly and mountainous areas. They are well known as being steady on their feet, so much so that the phrase “
as sure-footed as a goat
” was created about them. Another popular goat phrase is “
to get someone’s goat
”, which means to make someone annoyed. A group of goats is called a
tribe
, a
herd
or a
trip
.
There are some famous goats in literature, folklore and song, including the fairytale The Three Billy Goats Gruff, the Swiss goats looked after by Peter in the story Heidi, and the children’s song My Highland Goat. Can you think of any more?
The goat is the symbol of the astrological sign Capricorn. The word
capra
means ‘goat’ in Italian. Can you find any words beginning with capra or capri? Have a look in the dictionary. What do they mean? Do you think they are linked to goats?
